Riot damage: insurance and security

Reading time: 2 minutes

Since the introduction of the curfew on January 23, many cities have been affected by curfew riots. Opponents of the measure took to the streets after curfew, leaving a trail of destruction. They smashed shop windows, looted stores, set off fireworks and set cars on fire. Many shopkeepers and other entrepreneurs in the cities concerned suffered damage as a result. To what extent is this damage actually compensated by insurers? And what can you do as an entrepreneur to prevent future damage to your property?

Insurance and policy conditions

The extent to which the damage is compensated depends on the insurance that you closed and the policy conditions of these insurance policies. To In order to receive full compensation for damage, you will need to have extensive insurance.

Think of:

  • Building insurance: for damage to the building itself.
  • Glass insurance: for damage to, for example, glass front.
  • Contents insurance: for items that are separate, such as a counter.
  • Inventory insurance: for damage to the inventory due to fire, burglary or vandalism.

Do you have all these insurance policies? Even then, it depends on the policy conditions exactly what damage you will be reimbursed and for what amount.

Damage to car

Has your (company) car been damaged by the curfew riots? Then this is not automatically reimbursed. If you only have WA insurance, then you're out of luck. In that case, the damage caused by these riots is not covered by your insurance.

You will be reimbursed in full or in part with the following insurance policies:

  • All-risk insurance: all damage to your car is covered.
  • Limited hull insurance: depending on your policy conditions, all or part of the damage will be reimbursed.

Prevent damage in the future

Peace seems to have returned in most cities. Of course we hope that there will be no further riots, but what the reaction will be to the extension of the curfew and the lockdown in general is still unclear.

As an entrepreneur, do you want to prevent damage to your property due to new riots? Unfortunately, you are not allowed to keep watch at your shop or building. Fear of new riots is not seen as a good reason to break the curfew yourself. In addition, it has been found that the rioters can be very aggressive, even against police officers or riot police. Keeping watch yourself is therefore not that wise either.

What you can do is enable security. Trained security guards, such as those from Dutch Crowd Security, know how to deal with dangerous and threatening situations. They also know how to de-escalate a situation. Fortunately, security guards are allowed to break the curfew to do their job.
