Non-essential stores must remain closed: INretail is appealing

Reading time: 1 minute

INretail, the trade association of the retail sector, is appealing against the judgment of the court in The Hague that non-essential shops must keep their doors closed. The trade association filed a lawsuit against the State about the closure.

According to the judge, the government correctly weighed the interests when it decided to close the non-essential stores.

The court also refers to the advice of the Outbreak Management Team (OMT), which says that there is no room for relaxation. Because of society's great desire for perspective, the State nevertheless allowed some relaxations, and according to the court it was a justified choice to let education and young people make use of more flexible rules first.

The trade association is disappointed with the ruling and is preparing to appeal. "We see opportunities and possibilities and believe that a better balance of interests should be made, because shops can open safely," INretail said on Friday.

"The cabinet follows the advice of the OMT seamlessly, but these are exclusively based on medical considerations. The economic and social consequences have an immense impact, but the judge makes them of secondary importance due to this ruling and INretail thinks that is fundamentally wrong. That is why we are fighting we through."

"With the alternatives offered, it is impossible for too many entrepreneurs to achieve realistic turnovers. It causes the loss of 50.000 to 60.000 jobs. It is inconceivable that the cabinet does not take this into account in its decisions on corona measures," said the association.
