Criminals are more likely to steal drugs from shipping containers

Reading time: 1 minute

According to the Financieele Dagblad, the port of Rotterdam is increasingly dealing with intruders who come to take drugs from containers. The newspaper concludes this from a tour of various companies in the port.

According to director Jan Kamp of Customs, the intruders are paid a lot for their work. It would sometimes involve tens of thousands of euros per order. If they are caught, they will be fined no more than 90 euros and they will be back on the street after a few hours. Customs has already made 150 arrests at the various port areas this year. Only if the burglars have the drugs with them at that time can they also be prosecuted for drug smuggling, which carries higher penalties.

Internal crime

Drug smuggling seems to be on the rise. This year, customs already intercepted more than 30 tons of cocaine, which is more than in the whole of 2019. A company that is heavily affected by this type of crime is Agro Merchants. A spokesperson tells the FD that they now spend more time repairing burglary damage than on the actual work. Some employees have also been arrested on suspicion of involvement in drug smuggling. Reason for the management to demand a VOG from the staff. Subsequently, almost the entire staff resigned! Of the thirty who left, five are now detained.
