Camera security: what should you pay attention to?

Reading time: 3 minutes

One of the ways in which you can secure your home, shop, business premises or museum is by installing cameras. If you don't have much experience with camera security yet, you probably won't know what to look for when purchasing. That's why four tips in this blog.

Tip 1. Take privacy legislation into account

When using cameras, you must always take into account the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This applies to companies, but also to individuals. You are of course allowed to have cameras in your own home, but if they also film the public road, you must also take this legislation into account in the field of privacy and the protection of personal data as a private individual. In practice, however, as a private individual you will not easily be fined for this.

The GDPR is therefore especially important for retailers who want to install a camera in their store, or entrepreneurs who want to monitor their catering or business premises in this way. In this article you can read everything about camera security and privacy legislation.

Tip 2. Keep hackers out

Unfortunately, many cheap camera systems are easy to hack. You then think that placing cameras provides more security, but in reality the opposite happens. When a camera system is easy to hack, hackers can just look at your images. Especially when your cameras are in your own home, that is of course not a good idea! Moreover, personal data can be stolen in this way. Finally, this can make break-ins easier because the hackers know exactly when someone is present and when not.

To keep hackers out, it is best to use a system with a secure connection based on encryption. In addition, use strong passwords and two-factor authentication. Always make sure that any security updates are installed as soon as possible.

Tip 3. Pay attention to whether and where the images are saved

Whether you use the cameras to secure your own home, a shop, a business premises or a museum… in all cases you want the images from the camera to be stored somewhere, so that you can access the images in the event of a burglary or other criminal activity. hand over to the police.

Often the images are either stored on an SD card (which is in the camera itself) or in the cloud. The disadvantage of the SD card is that the camera including SD card can be stolen. It is therefore better to opt for a system where the images are stored in the cloud. Please note: subscription costs may be attached to this.

Tip 4. Choose sufficient image quality

Of course, the image quality is also very important when purchasing cameras. A higher image quality means that you see more details in the images. This is important when the cameras have recorded criminal activity (such as theft). This will make it easier to see what happened on the image and the police can better use the images to identify suspicious persons.

Consider the size of the angle of view (the angle that the camera takes into account) and note that the camera must have night vision.
