Personal security: what is it exactly?

Reading time: 2 minutes

The purpose of one personal security guard is to secure the person or the environment in which the person is located. A personal security officer is also referred to as a bodyguard, bodyguard or VIP security officer. This is often carried out by a private company, but it can also be done by the government. There are several reasons for enabling personal security. If a person is threatened with death, violence or if someone is forced to hand over something of value (blackmail). The personal security officer ensures that a person moves safely and protected and makes the immediate environment safe. Personal security guards can be hired for office hours only, but it is also possible to use 24/7 security.

What does a personal security guard do?

A personal protection officer finds himself in various situations in which he must be alert and act appropriately. They have knowledge of general police tasks, but they themselves have a specialist task, namely protecting people. The personal protection officer is responsible for the well-being of his clients and must shield these persons from dangers. The security officer's task is not only to fend off danger, but also to prevent attacks on clients. It is therefore important that a security plan is drawn up prior to the security work.

Passive and active protection

Security measures can be divided into two types of security, namely 'passive' and 'active'.

Passive personal protection is done by objects and devices. These devices contribute to the safety of a person. Think for example of a bulletproof vest, doors that open with a fingerprint, an armored car, security cameras, smoke detectors, etc.

With active personal protection, people are active. These are, for example, the doormen at the entrance of a building, the guard who monitors the security cameras, the receptionist, the manager who has had a safety plan drawn up, the bodyguard, etc. In practice, passive and active personal protection often go hand in hand. An alarm only makes sense if it also makes someone extra alert. A security camera is only useful if there is also someone watching the monitors.

Personal security has been around for centuries and is receiving increasing attention. The need for personal security is increasing and there is also an increasing budget for it. Over the years, technology has not lagged behind, because there are more and more technological systems and attributes that personal security officers can use. The increase in interest in personal security could be related to: the changed situation in the world, growing tensions in the multicultural society, top athletes with lots of possessions and are often absent, increasing terrorist threats and more liquidations in the criminal circuit.
