The impact of a shop robbery on your employees

Reading time: 2 minutes

A robbery at your store is every store owner's nightmare. A robbery causes enormous damage. The financial damage caused by vandalism and/or stolen goods is bad enough, but the mental damage it causes to your employees is often even more serious. You can prevent this by using store security.

How common is a store robbery?

As humans, we often tend to think: that doesn't happen to me. Unfortunately, it is impossible to predict whether your store will be robbed or not. Although the number of robberies has thankfully decreased between 2011 and 2018, we saw an increase again in 2019. From January to August of 2019, no less than 186 armed robberies were committed against shops. This is an increase of 8% compared to the previous year. No figures are yet known for 2020.

In addition to an increase in the number of robberies, we also see another trend: weapons are increasingly used in a robbery.

The impact of a robbery on store employees

Anyone who has experienced it can tell you: the mental impact of an (armed) robbery is great. The robbery often turns someone's life upside down emotionally for a long time. Victims of an (armed) robbery often need therapy to give the event a place and to be able to return to work in the store with a feeling of safety. In addition, there is sometimes physical injury when the perpetrator assaulted or injured the victims.

What preventive measures can you take?

A robbery can happen anywhere, anytime. Still, there are a number of measures you can take to discourage robbers.

  1. Loot Limit: Limit the amount of money in the cash register. Continuously skim banknotes of €50 and above. Make loot limitation known by stickers 'We don't have anything in return: € 100, € 200, € 500.
  2. Install a camera so that staff and customers who walk in or out can be clearly seen.
  3. Provide a safe with a time lock or time delay.
  4. Put stickers on the door and shop window with “Safe with time delay” and “Here cameras watch for your and our safety”.
  5. Have your staff take robbery training so they know what to do in the event of a robbery.
  6. Hire security: Physical security acts as a deterrent to potential robbers. Moreover, security guards know better than anyone what to do when a dangerous or suspicious situation arises.
